The Twilight Saga actors Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner along with director Chris Weitz make their way through the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Sunday (November 8th).
Word around the block says the bodyguards and security was very tight due to the paparazzi, no surprise there!
Lately I've been craving soup made with very-thick (sometimes called "jumbo") udon noodles, basically pencil-thick size, and I can't seem to find them anywhere (I have searched the local Asian markets etc. and all I can find are the linguine-thick kind.)
I found this recipe online:
http://closetcooking.blogspot.com/2
My questions:
1) Does this recipe look like it will work?
2) Can I use my KitchenAid stand mixer (it has the extra-powerful motor) with the dough hook to knead the pasta dough, or do I need to do this by hand?
3) Any other pointers from people who have BTDT?
Thanks!!
The bet technically said that we used the next month revised figures, as the initial figures are somewhat shaky, so I'm more than willing to wait another 30 days. However, I think it's apparent that the figures won't be revised .3% downward, so I'm asking that the bet be paid now.
This brings up interesting questions, however, in that in the time since I made that bet (08/07/09) we've seen the DOW Jump almost 700 points from 9,370 to its current 10,023 (hitting 10,092 on its October 19th high). We've also seen gold go from $955/oz to what will most surely be at or above $1,100 today. That's a 15% return in 3 months for those counting.
My point with this is that I think the situation today is similar to the situation in August when I made that bet, and perhaps even more so: people underestimate the fundamentals nature of this economic downturn. And fundamentals are exactly what's the problem. Yet, if you're looking at the stock index numbers - which are still lower than the equivalent numbers in 2000 once you factor in inflation, mind - you're seeing what is supposed wealth generation.
My thought is that this is bupkiss. Sure, there are situations where stocks will rise, and there are some stocks that are undervalued. There's ALWAYS money to be made in the stock market with the right picks. But I certainly do not see any sort of "recovery" on the horizon; at the very most I see a flattening of the line, and I'm not even optimistic about that.
The unemployment rate is most certainly a driving factor of this. And when you realize that the 10.2% is the U-3 number and not U-6 (U-6 including "marginal" workers and similar), which stands at 17.5% currently, and which has been outpacing U-3, then you get a much different picture of the future. Add into that the holidays right around the corner which already had an abysmal showing the past year and....
Thankfully, I'm not an efficient market theory advocate or else none of this would make sense. In fact, I think people are largely irrational and that the market naturally reflects this. This is especially true when it comes to money and the pursuit thereof. In short, this supposed turn-of-the-corner and soon-to-be prosperity is, once again, bupkiss. I could be wrong, but I trust in the fundamentals, and the fundamentals say bupkiss.
I don't think my interpretation of current information is wrong, in fact I see it hard to interpret it otherwise. I see merely a tiny peak before another dip, little more. But that's the question I pose to you - if you think I'm wrong, what sort of information do you have that I'm missing? Is this actually the beginning steps to a long uphill battle?
I trust in fundamentals, and I don't see them being wrong any time soon. High unemployment and high commodity prices = bad. It's a fairly simple formula and I'm not sure it's ever been wrong. So I'm putting this out there for anyone who thinks I'm just a jaded free marketeer who sits in his basement lighting cigars with hundred dollar bills while lamenting anti-trust laws - I offer you the chance to challenge me and my fundamentals. I am willing to wager, with donations to charity, upon any number of other things. For example, I think the DOW will be 9,000 or below by the end of Jan 2010, and 8,800 or below by February. I also think unemployment will peak at the end of this year at about 10.5% - 10.7%, with it hitting 11% easily by Feb.
If you think otherwise, I (and the Central Illinois Food Bank) encourages your future support.
Now, each bet is separate, so don't think that my putting things out here constitutes an immediate agreement with one or any of you; if you wish to wager respond with the terms and we will discuss. Depending on the consideration involved, time period, etc. I may want to alter terms and/or predictions.

Looking at the reviews on the dishwashers in our price range at Lowe's scares me. The low-end Frigidaire dishwashers have terrible reviews, and the low-end GEs have no reviews at all. Also, I have an innate distrust of reviews just because people who hate a product are more likely to review it (right?) so I was hoping y'all had some insight for me.
Also, since this is the first time I'll have had a dishwasher in a long time, does anyone have any general rules for what goes in the dishwasher and what needs to be hand washed? I never paid attention when we bought stuff because we didn't have a dishwasher anyway, and when I lived alone, I put everything in there whether it was supposed to go or not (heh!).
TIA.
What can i do to make her stop?

Got a product or service to sell? If you're not looking for a total design and setup package, but just want to get selling, Ars Technica walks through the setup of a PayPal-based site for a small business.
As Jacqui Cheng notes, PayPal won't provide you with search-friendly, clean-looking design and expertly managed inventory system, but can take the grunt work out of simple cart-based, fixed-price commerce with credit cards. It need not be a whole side business you're setting up—even having a whole bunch of goods around your house to pass off might make it worth setting up a quick web site with a bit more cachet than eBay or Craigslist. The security and credit card processing is handled by PayPal, while you're in charge of explaining why someone would buy from you.
Hit the link for the very helpful run-through. Got an equally easy system for an e-commerce site? If your job doesn't involve sending out endless amounts of email about it, tell us in the comments.
GetDeb's web site has long been the go-to spot for Ubuntu (and Debian, and Mint) users to grab the latest copies of software not yet released by their official repositories. Now GetDeb makes it even easier with a repository.
By adding GetDeb's repository to your Linux system, you'll get access to pre-compiled .deb packages as soon as they're available on GetDeb's site. That means apps like the GIMP graphics editor, Songbird, and other software that hits a major release between Ubuntu's six-month release cycle are available to you just as soon as someone's nice enough to compile the newest code.
GetDeb's repository is free to use and install. Hit the link for instructions on adding it to your 9.04 or 9.10 Ubuntu system; users of older Ubuntu systems can still grab packages at GetDeb's legacy web site.
Kraft Foods launches a $16.4 billion bid for Cadbury PLC, refusing to bolster a previous offer that was rebuffed by the British candy maker. A combination of the two companies would create a group that generates at least $50 billion in total revenue.
Iraq's electoral commission submits a proposal to hold national elections five days after the previously scheduled date. Parliament cleared the way for the national poll when it passed a crucial election law Sunday night after weeks of political haggling.
I'm hungry right now.
My question to you is should I eat my sandwich now and then have nothing to eat later or eat nothing now and have my sandwich later?
Bonus question: Do you like how I included all the unneeded backstory or would you have preferred no backstory and just the question?

Not a depiction of actual sandwich.

Gordon Brown has telephoned the mother of a soldier killed in Afghanistan to apologise for a letter of condolence he sent her which was littered with errors.
The Prime Minister addressed the mother of 20 year-old Jamie Janes as "Mrs James" and left some words half-finished in his apparent haste. He misspelled the name Jamie, and rather than start the letter again, wrote over it. She reacted with fury, accusing Mr Brown of disrespecting the memory of her son.
Mr Brown moved to limit the damage by telephoning Mrs Janes to assure her he meant no offence.

how many shirts do you own? pants/skirts/dresses?
I am never sure what the appropriate number is.
Does anybody have any suggestions on flowers that are easy to grow outdoors, no greenhouse, very little fuss, potentially drought resistant, hardy little things that will survive the summer and bloom in early October in the middle Tennessee area?

Q: How do you feel about Don as an actor and do you feel differently about him as a viewer?
A: It's hard for me to separate the two, because I'm obviously much closer to the character than most of the viewers. And also I'm very protective of the character. A lot of people, especially this season, are very frustrated and angry with Don and his choices and his decisions. But something to understand about the guy is he's significantly damaged. This is a guy that is not well-equipped for being emotionally available, or being mature or giving in a relationship. So it's a challenge to make him sympathetic because he does make so many difficult decisions. But again, they are motivated by how the guy was raised. I do think he loves his family very much. I think he's hard time expressing -- or at least maintaining -- that and still be true to himself. It's a difficult line to walk. What I enjoy about him as an actor is walking that line. And that's what makes it difficult to watch as a viewer. You're by turns transfixed and repulsed by this guy.

"Twilight" movies inspire vampire stampede
"'Twilight' here! We got your red hot 'Twilight' angle heah!"You can almost hear the refrain like there's a carnival barker stalking the halls of the Santa Monica hotel hosting the annual American Film Market, where independent producers from around the world seek financing and distribution deals.
With "Twilight" fever regripping the nation -- Chapter 2, "New Moon," rises in theaters November 20 -- many of the projects on display at the trade show are spinning any "Twilight" connection they can find to hawk their wares.
London-based Protagonist Pictures is in the market with an erotic period drama, drawn from a Guy De Maupassant short story, titled "Bel Ami." It's a niche project with limited appeal but for the fact that the lead character of a young Parisian playboy will be incarnated by Edward Cullen himself of "Twilight" fame, Robert Pattinson.
In other offerings, the content speaks for itself.
"Blood: A Butcher's Tale," from Horizon Motion Pictures, trots out vampires as the romantic and physical rivals of the forlorn butcher of the title. Toothin Theatre's "The Death of Alice Blue" puts a comely intern in the hands of an advertising company run by -- yep -- bloodsuckers (no surprise there).
Amadeus Pictures is hawking "Vampiro," a Mexican-American/East L.A. take on vampire gangs and sexy vampiras. "Dark Moon Rising," from New Films International, pushes the werewolf angle (and a title echo) with the tale of a small-town girl falling in love with a drifter who has a hairy past.
On the hardcore end of the spectrum is "Stake Land," from Dark Sky Films, which includes a nun played by Kelly McGillis trying to survive in a world overrun by vampires.
And Eleven Arts has the enviable mission of selling "Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl," a Japanese offering about some sort of unfortunate contretemps between Vampire Girl and Frankenstein Girl.
In a non-AFM title, Pattinson's "Twilight" co-star Jackson Rathbone, who plays the veggie vampire Jasper Hale, is starring in and co-producing "Girlfriend," from Wayne/Lauren Film. In the film, which just wrapped, Rathbone plays the volatile ex-boyfriend of a small-town single mother pursued by a young man with Down Syndrome.
Bottom line: There's plenty for buyers to sink their teeth into.
